Tracemetrics: Biometrics of the Hand

Measurements

Below are the 15 measurements that are the initial subject of the Tracemetrics Project.

In a previous version of the course, students used a ruler to draw straight lines between the anchor points noted. Then, they used a ruler to measure (in tenths of an inch), the length of the noted line. More information on each measurement appears after the samples. In this project, you will want to compute these using the image process program.

Below are examples for Alice. Click on image to view enlargement.

Below are examples for Bob.

Below is specific information on each measurement.

Example. Here is an example of how a measurement can be done using the image processing software provided.

Load the image (Example H below) into the Image processing software using the File --> Open command.

Example H Example I

You can work with this image directly. Example I above shows a line drawn for measurement 12.

  • Activity B
Perform the activities described above on the camera images of the back of the hands of students and friends of the class, rather than on the hand tracings. Request a copy of the "in-class" database for the device of your choice from Professor Sweeney.
