Researchers and Privacy Advocates Examine Emerging Technologies

  • November 6-7, 2003, at Carnegie Mellon
  • Hosted by the Data Privacy Lab of Carnegie Mellon SCS ISRI
  • Goal is to bring together world-class computer science researchers, who are working on emerging technologies that are facing privacy concerns, and leading privacy advocates, who are voicing privacy concerns about these emerging technologies, to discuss issues and examine traditional and innovative solutions (such as privacy technology).

Congressional Briefing on Privacy and Emerging Technologies

  • Tentative: December 2003, Senate Office Building, DC
  • Hosted by the Data Privacy Lab SCS ISRI
  • Goal is to have computer science researchers and privacy advocates discuss emerging technologies and privacy issues with congressional staff. Traditional and innovative solutions (such as privacy technology) will be examined.


Past Workshops


Workshop on the Relationship Between Privacy and Security

  • Held March 27-28, 2002 at Carnegie Mellon
  • Hosted by the Internet Security Lab of Carnegie Mellon SCS ISRI
  • Speakers included FTC Commissioner Mozelle W. Thompson, Drummond Reed, founder of XNS.org, and included input from the European Directorate-General, Joint Research Centre Institute for the Protection and Security of the Citizen, as well as the chairman of the World Wide Web Consortium's P3P privacy project.
  • Goal was to explore how privacy and security go hand-in-hand; social, technical and usability issues; global dimensions of privacy, economic issues and standardization.


Security Workshop on Vulnerable State Networks and Databases

  • Held May 29-30, 2002 at Carnegie Mellon
  • Hosted by the Security Research Consortium of Carnegie Mellon SCS ISRI
  • Speakers included governors of Pennsylvania, Vermont, and State and Corporate Information Technology Experts
  • Goal was to explore ways to strengthen the security of state information systems and network infrastructures


Privacy in D.A.T.A.

  • Held March 2003, at Carnegie Mellon
  • Co-hosted by the ALADDIN Center and the Data Privacy Lab of Carnegie Mellon SCS ISRI
  • Sponsored by NSF
  • Goal was to introduce theoretical computer scientists and data mining experts to data privacy problems found in surveillance technologies


Trust and Dependability in Mobile, Wireless and Pervasive Computing Environments

  • Held March 31-April 1, 2003 in Phoenix, AZ
  • Organized by the Sustainable Computing Consortium and the Mobile Commerce Lab of Carnegie Mellon SCS ISRI
  • Explored privacy issues in mobile and pervasive environments and included Motorola’s CTO as well as a number of VPs from key companies involved in mobile and pervasive computing.


Brainstorming Sessions on CS Research and Privacy

  • Held July 2003, at Carnegie Mellon
  • Hosted by the Data Privacy Lab of Carnegie Mellon SCS ISRI
  • Attendance by Carnegie Mellon’s School of Computer Science Faculty
  • Goal was to examine privacy issues becoming increasingly present in some computer science research on emerging technologies. Traditional and innovative solutions (such as privacy technology) were also discussed.
